Abstract

PURPOSE: To stabilize the catalyst and facilitate its cyclic use, by adding a specific amount of a di-substituted phosphine to the Co catalyst, in carbonylation of an olefinic compound.
CONSTITUTION: An olefinic compound is carbonylated in an organic solvent, in the presence of an Co catalyst incorporated with a di-substituted phsphin of the formula R1R2PH (R1 and R2 are hydrocarbon groups, e.g. methyl, ethyl, or phenyl) in an amount of 0.20W20 equivalents based on 1 atom of Co, to inhibit the deposition of the Co metal in the separation of the formed compound from the reaction mixture by distillation, and to circulate the catalyst directly. The catalyst thus circulated is active under a relatively low pressure to effect the carbonylation under relatively mild conditions.
