Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the titled catalyst composition with excellent catalytic activity providing stabilized high reaction result constantly constituted by using P, Mo and at least one of the elements selected from Tl, IA group and II group metal as essential components and specifying a surface area and a pore volume.
CONSTITUTION: An oxidizing catalyst composition of an unsaturated aldehyde constituted by using P, Mo and at least one of the elements (X) selected from Tl, IA group metal (e.g.; K) and II group metal (e.g.; Ba) as essentil components and, moreover, incorporating a supplementary element such as Si or Al. An atomic ratio P:Mo:X constituting this composition is 0.1W8:12:0.01W10, especially, 0.3W5:12: 0.2W6. Furthermore a surface area of this composition is 4W20m2/g, especially, 4.5W15m2/g and a pore volume is 0.08W0.5ml/g, especially, 0.09W0.35ml/g and it is necessary to satisfy all these conditions simultaneously. In the presence of the catalyst composition, an unsaturated aldehyde (e.g.; acrolein) is oxidized to give a corresponding unsaturated carboxylic acid (e.g.; acrylic acid) in good reproducibility.
