Abstract
PURPOSE: Using tungsten metal or a tungsten compound as a catalyst, the reaction between an alkylene oxide of 3 or more carbon atoms and water is effected in the presence of carbon dioxide, thus permitting the reduction in the amount of water employed and producing monoalkylene glycol with simple operations at low costs.
CONSTITUTION: As a catalyst, tungsten metal and/or a tungsten compound such as tungsten dioxide, tungstenic acid or alkali tungstaenate is used and the reaction between an alkylene oxide of 3 or more carbon atoms and water is effected in the presence of carbon dioxide to produce an alkylene glycol. This process inhibits the formation of dialkylene glycol or trialkylene glycol and reduce the amount of water to the stoichiometric level such as 1W5 times the molar quantity of the alkylene oxide, resulting in saving of the utility cost in separation and purification processes.
