Abstract
PURPOSE: To bacterium which belongs to Actinoplanes and produces an antibiotic, AB-111, is cultured and the antibiotic is collected from the culture mixture, whereby a novel antibiotic is produced, which strongly inhibits the growth of protozoans such as mildew.
CONSTITUTION: Actinoplanes SP53-6 or its mutant is cultured and a novel antibiotic, AB-111, melting at about 275°C is collected from the culture mixture. The incubation of the bacterium producing AB-111 is aerobically carried out in an artificial or natural medium containing adequate nutritions. The culture medium contains glucose, rhamnose or arabinose as a carbon source and polypepton or soybean flour as a nitrogen source. The collection of AB-111 is effected by subjecting the organic solvent extract to column chromatography.
