Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a propionate betaine in high purity and yield from hygienically safe raw materials, by reacting a tertiary amine with an acrylic acid homolog in a specific solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A tertiary amine of formula I (R1, R2 and R3 are 1W24C substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, 2W24C substituted or unsubstituted alkenyl, etc.) is reacted with an acrylic acid homolog of formula II [R4 is H, CH3, -CH2-CO2R5 (R5 is the same as defined by R1, R2 and R3)] in a solvent, e.g. acetone or toluene, which dissolves the raw materials as a reaction solvent but scarcely dissolves the propionate betaine, to give the aimed compound of formula III.
EFFECT: The method is advantageous from the viewpoint of the pollution prevention, and the raw materials will not cause side reactions or coprecipitation of inorganic salts. The ratio of the betaine formation can be remarkably improved.
