Abstract

PURPOSE:To ensure lockup in an entirely expanded position through a simple construction, by providing a fixed stopper, a piston rod, a movable stopper and a stopper disengaing means in the cylinder of a lockup device for opening and closing the back door of an automobile. CONSTITUTION:When a closed back door is opened, a piston 2 and a piston rod 3 are moved in the direction of expansion by the pressure of gas in a gas chamber. When the piston 2 and the piston rod 3 have reached the maximum expansion position, the engged portion 7a of a movable stopper 7 is engaged with in the annular groove 6a of a fixed stopper 6 so that a gas spring is locked up. When the door is thereafter slightly moved up, an elastic collar 8 pushes the umbrella-shaped portion 7b of the movable stopper 7 inwards to release the engaged portion 7a from the groove 6a to unlock the gas spring as the piston rod 3 is moved up by S. The lockup in the maximum expansion position is thus automated and ensured through a simple construction.
