Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain 1-amino-2-bromohydroxyanthraquinone, useful for the dye industry, in high yield, by the dibromination and the hydrolysis of 1-aminoanthraquinone in the presence of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid in a specific amount.
CONSTITUTION: 1-Aminoanthraquinone is dibrominated in sulfuric acid in an amount ≥50wt% or fuming sulfuric acid in an amount ≤10wt% in the presence of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid (e.g. acetic acid, propionic acid, etc.) at a molar ratio of 0.05W1.5, preferably 0.1W1.4, to give 1-amino-2,4-dibromoanthraquinone. After increasing the concentration of the sulfuric acid to ≥95% if necessary, the product is, without isolation, hydrolyzed preferably at 100W140°C in the presence of boric acid (preferably 1W3 molar ratio) to give the aimed intermediate.
EFFECT: The formation of blue impurities and tarry component as by-products can be inhibited in the bromination, and the resultant disperse dye provides clearly dyed articles.
