Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for dye, containing no by-product, in high quality and in high yield, by subjecting 1-aminoanthraquinone to dibromination in sulfuric acid in the presence of a specific amount of fatty monocarboxylic acid.
CONSTITUTION: 1-Aminoanthraquinone is subjected to dibromination in ≥50wt% sulfuric acid or ≤10wt% fuming sulfuric acid in the presence of a fatty monocarboxylic acid (e.g., acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, etc.) in a molar ratio of the monocarboxylic acid to 1-aminoanthraquinone 0.05W1.5, to give 1-amino- 2,4-dibromoanthraquinone. The dibromination is carried out at 50W150°C, preferably 60W130°C using a brominating agent, e.g., bromine, etc. in a molar ratio of the brominating agent to 1-aminoanthraquinone 1.0W3.0.
