Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce abnormal voltages in the ignition circuit of an igniter employing no distributor, by providing chip-laminated high-voltage diodes and setting the breakdown voltage of the diodes and chips at prescribed levels respectively.
CONSTITUTION: An igniter comprises diode-chip-laminated high-voltage diodes A1WA4 which can be used in the backward breakdown region. The breakdown voltage of the diodes A1WA4 is set 1.1W1.8 times higher than the maximum discharge start voltage of a spark plug. The resistivity of the N type or P type layer of a P+NN+ type or P+PN+ type silicon element as a diode chip 7 is adjusted so that the mean breakdown voltage per diode chip is set at 400W850V. Since the backward breakdown resisting capacity is thus set high, load due to a very sharply rising high voltage is endured. Therefore, property deterioration and breakdown are avoided.
