Abstract

PURPOSE:To exactly detect the toner density of the toner image of a reference target even when development unevenness occurs, by enabling a detector for receiving and detecting a light reflected from the toner image to detect the diffused reflection component of the reflected light. CONSTITUTION:A detector 10 consists of a light emitting element 10a, such as a light emitting diode and a photodetector 10b, such as a phototransistor. The element 10a is arranged so as to strike an illumination light on a toner image A on a photoreceptor surface 6a vertically to the surface 6a, and the photodetector 10b is arranged opposite to the toner image A on the photoreceptor 6a at a certain angle to the illumination light. Such an arrangement permits the right reflection component B of the light illuminating the toner image A to advance almost in the direction toward the element 10a, the photodetector 10b to detect the diffused reflection component, C and therefore, to receive an almost constant quantity of the reflected light if any unevenness in development, so its output to become an almost constant value. Consequently, the toner density can be exactly detected even if any development unevenness occurs.
