Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a lightweight material which is higher in the rate of swelling than that by conventional methods, that is, which is made further lighter in weight, by gelating blast furnace slag with mineral acids and alkali materials. CONSTITUTION:Blast furnace slag, more preferably quickly cooled blast furnace slag (blast furnace granuated slag and air blast slag) is ground to about 2,000- 6,000cm<2>/g Blaine's specific surface areas. Water is then added to this blast furnace slag to prepare a slurry of about 2-10%, after which a mineral acid such as sulfuric acid, a hydrochloric acid or the like is added with stirring for 1-2min, whereby it is swollen to about 5 times the original volume (in the case of a sulfuric acid.) The amount of addition of the mineral acid of this case is preferably 30-150pts.wt. based on 100pts.wt. of the blast furnace slag. An alkali material (e.g.; slaked lime) is then added to the product of reaction with the mineral acid at about 0-150 pts.wt. based on 100pts.wt. of the blast furnace slag and the mixture is stirred at 20-80 deg.C, to allow gelation to complete. As a result, the gel-like light-weight material having the rate of swelling about 14 times that of the product of reaction with the mineral acid is obtained.
