Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled dye containing considerably reduced amounts of byproducts causing wool contamination, by suspending and treating a dye cake obtained by brominating and hydrolyzing diamino-anthraquinone in an aqueous alkali solution.
CONSTITUTION: 1,5-or 1,8-Diamino-anthraquinone is dissolved in concentrated sulfuric acid or oleum, and reacted with molecular bromine to obtain a brominated compound of formula I or II, where n is 0W2. Next, the brominated compound is dissolved in concentrated sulfuric acid or oleum, and heated in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. boric acid) to hydrolyze. Thereafter, the reactant is mixed with water to deposit brominated diamino-dihydroxyanthraquinone of formula III or IV, where m is 0W2 and the average value of m in a mixture is 0.7W1.5, and the cake is separated, washed and recovered.
