Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain titled resin having a high rate of water absorption and being useful as a dewatering material, a material for sanitary articles, by copolymerizing an acrylic acid with a specified hydroxyacrylate at a high monomer concentration in the absence of a crosslinking agent by using a water-soluble radical polymerization initiator.
CONSTITUTION: A component (A) of formula I, wherein R is H or CH3 and R' is H, an alkali metal or NH4 and a component (B) of formula II, wherein R is the same as above, X is a C2W10 linear or branched alkylene or a group of formula III, and n is 2W3, in a form of an aqueous solution having a ratio, A/B, of 95/5W50/50 (component A is calculated as an acid) and a total monomer concentration of component A and B of 35wt% or higher, are copolymerized in the absence of a crosslinking agent by using a water-soluble radical polymerization initiator. It is possible to produce a highly water-absorbing, high-water absorption rate polymer which can be used not only as a conventional water-retaining material but also as a dewatering material used to remove water from an oil-water mixture. When it is used in paper diapers, the diapers can be used without leakage or wet feel.
