Abstract
PURPOSE:To increase the bending stress and the sucking rate of a matrix used for holding a phosphoric acid electrolyte, by using a matrix prepraed by adding a fibrous matter having resistance to phosphoric acid to a molded body made of silion carbide powder. CONSTITUTION:A cell in a battery is constituted of a fuel electrode 1, an oxidizing agent electrode 2, a matrix 3 imprengated with a phosphoric acid electrolyte and is interposed between these two electrodes, and conductive partition plates 4 which collect current from the electrodes 1 and 2 and also serve as passages for fuel and air. The matrix 3 is prepared by mixing a fibrous matter having resistance to phosphoric acid, such as a fiber cloth 5 made of quartz glass, into a molded body 6 made of silicon carbide powder. Figure (I) shows the matrix 3 whic is prepared by applying a pasty material made up of both silicon carbide powder and micro Teflon powder to the fiber clotch 5 made of quartz glass, before the cloth 5 with the pasty material is subjected to heat treatment to make silicon carbide layers 6 to be formed over the surfaces of the cloth 5. Or else, the matrix 3 is preferred to be formed by mixing quartz glass fiber and silicon carbide powder, before the mixture is added with a binding agent to make a paste and this paste is subjected to heat treatment.
