Abstract

PURPOSE:To nondestructively detect the degree of material change of an actual member and to estimate the remaining life with high accuracy by polishing part of said member, bonding a vessel contg. an electrolyte soln. to the polished part, and measuring the polarization characteristics of the metal of the polished part with the polished part as one of poles. CONSTITUTION:In the measurement of the secular change of a high-temp. large- diameter pipe 1 for boilers or the like, the part 2 of the member under operation is polished to get rid of oxide scale or the like, and in order to immerse the part 2 in an electrolyte soln. 4, a vessel 5 is placed on the pipe 1, and is adhered with an antileakage agent 6, whereby these are made watertight. The soln. 4 is then put therein, and with the polished part 2 as one of poles, a counter pole (platinum or the like) 3 is immersed and is connected to a variable DC power source device 8. The polarization characteristics are measured with an ammeter 7. The value measured in this way is compared with the value measuring the polarization characteristics of the new material of the same material as that of the pipe 1, whereby the secular change is known. In this way, the remaining life is made estimatable nondestructively with high accuracy.
