Abstract

PURPOSE: To quantitatively evaluate the pitting potentials and passivation holding currents in polarization curves as indices for the degree of sensitization of materials being one of the causes for stress corrosion cracking by using a specific electrolyte.
CONSTITUTION: Glass made electrolytic baths 1A, 1B communicate with each other. A material 2 such as stainless steel or other and a saturated calomel standard electrode 3 are contained in the bath 1A and a Pt counter electrode 4 is contained in the bath 1B, and the INH2SO4+0.5MNaCl solution 5 having been removed of dissolved O2 is sealed therein. A voltage is supplied between the material 2 and counter electrode 4 from a power source E and the potential defferences between the electrode 3 and sample 2 are recorded in a voltmeter 6. At the same time the current values at that time are read with an ammeter 7 and an anode polarization curve is obtained. The minumum values of the current density on said curve as passivation hoding current imin and the potentials at the points where the current density infinitely diverges as pitting potential EPIT are plotted as parameters of quantitatively indicating the dependency of heat treatment conditions.
