Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture a one-side hot dipped steel strip with superior characteristics by forming a film of a water glass-carbon powder composition as a hot dipping inhibitor on a side of a steel strip requiring no hot dipping and dipping the strip in a hot dipping both. CONSTITUTION:Powder of sootlike amorphous carbon is uniformly dispersed in a soln. prepared by moderately diluting a thick aqueous soln. of alkali silicate with water optionally in the presence of a surfactant. This composition as a hot dipping inhibitor is applied to a side of a steel strip requiring no hot dipping, dried, and vitrified by heat treatment to form a dense film. The strip is passed through a reducing furnace, where iron oxide on a side requiring hot dipping is activated by reduction, and the strip is dipped in a hot dipping bath to carry out one-side hot dipping. The inhibitor film on the side requiring no hot dipping is then removed with a brushing roll or the like.
