Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an electrolytic cell which can electrolyze aqueous alkali chloride solution at a low voltage, by forming a porous layer having no electrode activity between the anode or cathode and cation exchange membrane with a layer which is produced by heating and press-welding the hydrogel of a metallic hydroxide or a metallic oxide on the membrane surface. CONSTITUTION:The porous layer is formed on the film face by pressing a hydrogel containing 0.5-60% hydroxide or oxide of electrically nonconductive metal, (Ti, etc.) to the cation exchange membrane surface after preferably adding the binder, etc., of fluroine containing polymer. Then, this porous layer is heated and press- welded to the membrane surface with 80-220 deg.C and 1-150kg/cm<2> pressure. The cation exchange membrane to which the porous layer is press-welded, is arranged to the surface of anode or cathode through the porous layer. It is desirable to use a fluroine-containing polymer as the cation exchange membrane. In this case, an electrolytic cell which has remarkably small cell voltage is obtained, because the porous layer thus formed has a thin thickness.
