NEW MATERIAL:A bromoacetoxyalkyl methacrylate expressed by the formula (R is 2W3C alkylene).
EXAMPLE: 2-Bromoacetoxyethyl methacrylate.
USE: An industrial antimicrobial agent suitable for a polymeric material, etc., used as an antifouling agent for water paints and fish nets, or an antiseptic for starch and mud or an intermediate for an industrially useful compound.
PROCESS: Bromoacetic acid preferably always remaining in excess in the reaction system, is reacted with a hydroxyalkyl methacrylate in an inert organic solvent which is azeotropic with water, preferably in the presence of a dehydrating catalyst, to give a compound expressed by the formula. The compound as an antimicrobial agent may also be used as an oligomer or a composite agent with another carrier according to the form of use.
