PURPOSE:To branch and couple light waves differing in wavelength by providing a line of optical fibers differing in size and a diffraction grating. CONSTITUTION:This device has concave diffraction grating 10, single optical fiber 1 for transmission arranged where it is coupled optically with the concave surface, optical fibers 2 and 3 for composite wave input, and optical fibers 4 and 5 for branched wave output. Then, the diameter of the high-refractive-index layer of optical fiber 1 for transmission is less than those of optical fibers 2 and 3 for composite wave input, and light having different wavelengths from optical fiber 1 for transmission is branched to optical fibers 4 and 5 for branches wave output via concave diffraction grating 10; and lights differing in wavelength from optical fibers 2 and 3 for composite wave input are coupled with optical fiber 1 for transmission via concave diffraction grating 10.
