Abstract

PURPOSE:To measure planktons quickly and inexpensively with good reproducibility by using a device provided with means of sampling water contg. planktons, putting the sampled water into a cylindrical vessel, injecting a foaming agent into the vessel, stirring the water and measuring the amount, color and odor of the produced foam. CONSTITUTION:At the time of installing this device on a red tide recovering ship or the like and measuring the plankton concn. in the sampled water, the inside water is removed through a drain pipe 9 of a cylindrical vessel, the sampled water is put in through a lead-in pipe 6, and a foaming agent is put, little by little, through a pipe 10. Air is put into the vessel from an air diffuser 12 through a compressed air lead-in pipe 11, whereby foam 15 is made. Air bubbles are made by moving a propeller 17 with a stirrer. If the foam is kept produced while introducing the detecting water for about several minutes and discharging the same from a release pipe 8, the foam 15 reaches an equil. and stagnates in the state 16 that it has fully extended into the upper part 14 of the cylinder. The plankton concn. and the contents of harmful planktons in the sampled water are known by contrasting with the height and color of this foam with the color samples having beforehand been made or optically detecting reflected or transmitted light. Further, harmful planktons are checked from the odor from an upper end 20.
