Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the erosion of an electrode for display due to an electrolytic soln. and inhibit a phenomenon that a transition metallic oxide layer peels off the electrode by using a metallic electrode as the electrode for display and forming the oxide layer on the electrode. CONSTITUTION:An electrically-conductive corrosion-resistant metal such as Cr, Au, Cu or Ni is vapor deposited on the surfaces of a transparent insulating substrate made of glass or the like to form an electrode for display, its lead and a common electrode. Tungsten oxide is then vapor deposited on the electrode in 100-500Angstrom thickness and made semicrystalline by heating at 350-400 deg.C for about 5min. The semicrystalline WO3 is colorless and transparent and has corrosion resistance while maintaining electrical conductivity. Tungsten oxide is further vapor deposited on the WO3 layer in about 5,000Angstrom thickness to form a noncrystalline WO3 layer without carrying out heat treatment. After removing the surface of the noncrystalline WO3, SiO2 or the like is vapor deposited to form a transparent insulating film.
