Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a tertiary amide in high yield by reacting an alcohol or an aldehyde with a primary or secondary amine in the presence of a Cu-Ni catalyst having excellent properties and durability, under neary atmospheric pressure, while removing the formed water.
CONSTITUTION: An alcohol or aldehyde is made to react with a primary or secondary amine at 150W300°C, preferably 160W250°C, under atmospheric pressure to 5atm (gauge pressure), preferably atmospheric pressure to 1atm(gauge pressure), in the presence of a Cu-Ni catalyst, while removing the formed water, to give a tertiary amine. The molar ratio of Cu and Ni of the catalyst is. Cu:Ni=1:9W9:1. The catalyst may be supported on a carrier. The formed water is preferably distilled and removed by blowing H2 gas into the reaction system during the reaction.
EFFECT: Simple equipments can be used because of the mild conditions.
USE: Intermediate of rust preventives, etc. Urethane catalyst.
