Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for a variety of industrial and agricultural chemicals in high purity and yield, only by the extraction of β-chloropropionic acid prepared by the reaction between acrylonitrile and hydrochloric acid under pressure at a relatively low temperature, with an organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylonitrile is reacted with conc. hydrochloric acid under pressure at 30W100°C, preferably 50W60°C, for 10W16hr, to prepare β-chloropropionic acid, which is extracted with an organic solvent, and the organic solvent is then distilled off to give β-chloropropionic acid in high purity of 98% or more and yield of 90% or more without a purifying operation. The organic solvent should have an appropriate boiling point and a high partition ratio for the β-chloropropionic acid; therefore, benzene, toluene or xylene may be cited as the organic solvent. A little β- chloropropionic acid distilled in the solvent can be saved from loss by the recycled use of the recovered solvent.
