PURPOSE:To combine signal light and locally emitted light and maximize detection efficiency by detecting the polarization states of the signal light and the locally emitted light or the difference between these and controlling an electrooptic crystal phase plate in the state when both coincide. CONSTITUTION:Signal light Es is partly taken out for the purpose of polarization direction detection by a 10dB semitransparent mirror 1 and after passing an analyzer 2, it is measured of its intensity with a photodetector 3 and depending upon the intensity output thereof, a servomotor 4 is controlled so that the analyzer 2 is rotated in the direction where the intensity output is maximized. The analyzer 2 and the 1/4 wavelength plate 5 on the locally emitted light side are interlocked, and the axis of the signal light and the axis of the 1/4 wavelength plate 5 are in alignment. The locally emitted light EL is rotated of its polarization direction by a 1/2 wavelength plate 6, and is combined to the signal light by a semitransparent mirror 7. The heterodyne detection output by a photodetector 8 controls a servomotor 9 coupled to the 1/2 wavelength plate 6.
