Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce clean steel containing reduced amounts of sulfer, hydrogen, oxygen and the like by a method wherein the molten steel in a closed vessel is stirred in an atmosphere at a reduced pressure by blowing an inert gas into the molten steel through a lance.
CONSTITUTION: The molten steel 4 is placed in a laddle 2 fitted airtightly with a lid 2a, then a deoxidizer, lime, slag-forming materials and the like are charged into the laddle 2 to form molten slag 5. The temperature of the molten steel 4 is raised by heating by an electrode 3, and while evacuating the laddle 2 down to about 0.1torr. through a vent pipe 6 provided at the lid 2a, inert Ar gas is blown into the molten steel 4 through the lance 1 to stirr the molten steel 4 and the molten slag 5, so that the molten steel is converted into the clean steel containing reduced amounts of sulfur, hydrogen and oxygen as the result of desulfurization by the molten slag and dehydrogenation and deoxidation by the Ar gas.
