Abstract

PURPOSE: To continuously produce titled resin with good operational stability, by adding a modifier in portions to at least two polymerization vessels in grafting a monomer onto a rubbery polymer latex by a semicontinuous emulsion polymerization process.
CONSTITUTION: In the graft polymerization process wherein a plurality of serially arranged polymerization vessels are employed, and a rubbery polymer latex (such as a styrene/butadiene rubber latex) and a monomer capable of forming a rigid resin, such as styrene, together with a polymerization modifier such as dodecyl mercaptan, a polymerization initiator such as ammonium persulfate, an emulsifier such as an anionic surfactant are passed through the polymerization vessels; said modifier is fed in portions to a plurality of the vessels (for example, about 10W30% of a modifier is fed to the first vessel, and 90W70% of the modifier is fed to the subsequent vessels.
