Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce an impact-resistant resin having excellent mechanical properties and appearance, by emulsion-polymerizing at least one monomer in the presence of a rubbery polymer by use of a piston flow type polymerizer of a special construction.
CONSTITUTION: At least one monomer, e.g., styrene, is emulsion-polymerized in the presence of a rubbery polymer latex, e.g., polybutadiene latex, by use of a piston flow type polymerizer having a ratio, Q1/Q2, of at least 0.4, wherein Q1 is a time elapsed from the time of injection of a tracer to the time at which the concentration of a tracer at the discharge port reaches maximum, when not more than 3% of the polymerizer contents of a tracer is injected within 5sec into the polymerizer from a feed port lying in the region where, during the steady state operation, not more than 50wt% of the total monomers fed have been converted into polymer, and the tracer is detected at a discharge port lying in the region where not less than 10wt% of the total monomers fed have been converted into polymer, and Q2 is a mean dwell time of the tracer in the polymerizer.
