Abstract

PURPOSE: The graft polymerization of a mixture of a rubber-like polymer latex and vinyl aromatic monomers and vinyl cyanide monomers is effected in the presence of a redox type initiaton to produce a thermoplastic resin with high impact strength at normal and low temperatures and further high toughness.
CONSTITUTION: The graft polymerization of vinyl aromatic monomers and vinyl cyanide monomers, when necessary, acrylate or methacrylate esters onto a rubber polymer latex in which emulsion particles with more than 0.4 micron size have 50 W 75% average gel content, is conducted in the presence of a redox type initiator consisting of an organic peroxide and an iron salt. The organic peroxide is, e.g., cumene hydroperoxide, diisopropylbenzene hydroperoxide.
