Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve performance of a solid propellant rocket motor having a submerged nozzle, by loading auxiliary solid propellant around the submerged portion of said nozzle and thereby enhancing mass fraction of propellant.
CONSTITUTION: When annular ignitor 15 is ignited by an ignition signal given from the outside of the system, propellant is ignited on the inner surface 6 of main solid propellant 2 and on the outer surface 13 of auxiliary solid propellant 12. At the same time, a nozzle closure (not shown) fitted to submerged nozzle 8 is blown off and stable combustion of these two propellants is started. Here, since arrangement is such that the temperature of combustion gas of auxiliary solid propellant 12 is lower than that of main solid propellant 2 and the auxiliary solid propellant 12 is disposed around the submerged portion 10 of nozzle 8 on the outside thereof in the manner that it is exposed in combustion chamber 16, combustion gas of propellant 12 is ejected along the inner surface of nozzle 8 by the pressure of a large amount of high-temperature combustion gas produced by main solid propellant 2.
