Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the weight of a hollow crankshaft without lowering its mechnical properties and enhance its casting yield, by effecting casting to integrally embed a small-thickness metal pipe bent in the axial direction, to manufacture the hollow crankshaft.
CONSTITUTION: In a hollow crankshaft, a small-thickness bent metal pipe 2 is integrally embedded and bonded in the body 1 of the crankshaft by casing to provide an internal opening 3 and numerous oil holes 5 are defined by small tubes 4 attached perpendicularly or obliquely to the pipe 2. To manufacture the hollow crankshaft, a mold 8 is made first. Before an upper casting frame is set on the mold 8, the ends of the metal pipe 2 are supported as core prints 9 and the ends of the small tubes 4 are secured on the frame. Molten material is poured for the casing to embed and bond the pipe 2 and the tubes 4. After the casting the core prints projecting from the product are cut off by machining.
