Abstract

PURPOSE: A plastic base body is coated in order with an organic polymer layer, an organic-inorganic complex layer and an inorganic hard layer, thus forming a hard coating films enduced with high adhesion to the base body and high durability.
CONSTITUTION: A plastic base body 21 made of, e.g., polycarbonate is placed in a vacuum tank and an organic monomer, preferably the monomer forming the base body or a similar monomer, or organic oligomer is introduced. It is ionized by plasma to form an organic polymer layer 22 on the base body 21. Then, while the organic polymer layer 22 is being formed, an inorganic hard substance, preferably SiOx (x is 1W2), is diposited in a thin film to form an organic-inorganic complex film 23. Subsequently, only the inorganic hard substance is deposited to form an inorganic hard layer 24, resulting in formation of the objective coating film. The thicknesses of the organic polymer layer, the complex one and the inorganic one are preferably 10ÅW1μ, 10ÅW5μ and 0.1W5μ respectively.
