Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture high-grade steel with low S and O2 contents by pouring molten steel into a tightly sealed ladle, heating it with an electrode in the presence of molten slag having a specified composition, charging lime, and blowing an inert gas to agitate the molten steel.
CONSTITUTION: Molten steel 3 is poured into ladle 2 sealed with ladle cover 2a and sealant 9, and synthetic slag contg. 46% CaO and 49% SiO2 in 1W1.5 ratio of CaO to SiO2 is prepared. Electrode 7 for heating is dipped in molten slag 4 and supplied with electric current to heat steel 3 by resistance heat and raise the temp. At this time, the refractories of ladle 2 are hardly damaged by melting since the ratio of CaO to SiO2 of slag 4 is 1W1.5. Lime is then charged from hopper 6, and an inert gas such as Ar is blown through lance 8 to agitate steel 3. By further blowing an inert gas through gas feed pipe 5 to adjust the O2 content of the internal atmosphere of ladle 2 to ≤1%, steel 3 is refined to high-grade clean steel with low S and O2 contents.
