Abstract
PURPOSE:To produce a magnetic recording medium of superior short wavelength recording characteristics by using an electron beam as a evaporating source and maintaining a substrate at positive potential with respect to the evaporating source in forming a Co-Cr magnetic film on the substrate by a vacuum deposition method. CONSTITUTION:A medium substrate 2 consisting of a high-polymer material is disposed above a vacuum vessel 13, and a evaporating source 17 consisting of a water- cooled copper hearth 19 in which a thin-film material 18 is housed is disposed therein. Thence, an electron beam 21 is generated from an electron gun 20 provided near the evaporating source 17 to heat the thin film material 18, and positive potential with respect to the evaporating source 17 is impressed from a DC power source 22 to the substrate 2, so that the magnetic layer consisting essentially of Co and Cr is formed on the substrate 2. Thereby, the vertically magnetized film consisting essentially of Co and Cr is formed on the high-polymer substrate of poor heat resistance without giving any damage thereto.
