Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain filament having high self-elongating properties, and improved crimp performance, by subjecting oriented filaments of copolymerized polyethylene terephathalate to limited contraction under specific conditions, followed by heat treatment.
CONSTITUTION: Oriented polyester filaments of the copolymerized polyethylene terephthale type having ≥2wt% third component (e.g., neopentyl glycol, etc.) is subjected to limited contraction in a liquid (preferably water) at 70W100°C for 0.5W10sec to effect 20W60% limited contraction. The filaments are then heat- treated at 100W150°C for 5W60min. The content of the third component is such an amount that the melting point of the polymer is preferably about ≥200°C with respect to heat resistance and dimensional stability. When the prepared filaments are treated under dry heat at 180°C for 20min, they have self-elongating properties ≥3%. For example, they are processed into staple fibers, which are subjected to mix spinning with highly contractible polyester staple fibers to give a woven fabric. The fabric is heat-treated to give wool like feeling.
