Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain electric power while preventing the generation of environmental pollution, by subjecting water and SO2, which is adsorbed from a combustion exhaust gas by an adsorbent and is desorbed by an inactive gas, to electrolysis to make hydrogen to be produced, and using thus obtained hydrogen as a fuel for a fuel cell. CONSTITUTION:SO2 from combustion exhaust gas discharged in either a petroleum or a coal thermoelectric power station is held by adsorption on an adsorbent made of active carbon or the like. Following that, pure SO2 is desorbed by means of an inactive gas, purified SO2 being obtained. Thus obtained SO2 is put in an electrolytic bath together with water, is electrolyzed, and is converted into hydrogen and sulfuric acid. Or else, the above SO2 added with water and a halogen is allowed to react to make a hydrogen fluoride and sulfuric acid to be produced, before the hydrogen fluoride produced undergoes thermal decomposition and is converted into hydrogen and a halogen. Hydrogen obtained by the above method is used as a fuel for either an alkali fuel cell or a phosphoric acid fuel cell.
