Abstract

994,448. Fuel cells. VARTA A.G. May 7, 1962 [May 9, 1961], No. 17522/62. Heading H1B. Oxyhydrogen gas is utilized in a fuel cell by being first passed to the oxygen electrode in which no direct catalysis of the gases can take place, and then to the hydrogen electrode. If required, the residual oxygen in the hydrogen fed to the hydrogen electrode may be removed by direct catalysis. The oxyhydrogen gas from a holder 1 pass to cathodes 12 and the exhaust gas at 5 is sampled for its oxygen content (controller 6) passed through a catalyst bed 7 (platinum/asbestos or platinized activated carbon) to reduce any residual oxygen and then fed to the hydrogen electrode (anode) 13. Electrical energy is recovered at 20-21. Specification 907,907 is referred to.
