CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (R1 is amino-protecting group; R2 is H, carboxyl-protecting group) is made to react with a diazo compound of formula II (R3 is 1W5C alkyl, aralkyl) or a diazonium compound of formula III (R is arbitrarily substituted aromatic or heterocyclic ring; X is halogen) to give a cephamycin of formula IV (R5 is R3 or R4). The reaction is effected in an inert solvent such as tetrahydrofuran. The compound of formula I is obtained by reducing a symmetric disulfide of SF-1623 substance, a cephamycin antibiotic.
