Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the starting performance of arc, form a uniform arc column in welding and improve productivity by preheating beforehand the faying end surfaces of base metals and performing magnetic rotating arc welding.
CONSTITUTION: The butt end surfaces of the base metals 1, 2 having been formed with a gap (g) are beforehand preheated by flowing high-frequency electric current from a thyristor inverter 8 to a high-frequency induction coil 5 by closing a switch S1. When the faying region of the base metals 1, 2 reach a suitable temperature, a switch S2, an arc electric power source 6 and exciting coils 3, 4 are turned "on" to fire the arc between the butt end surfaces of the base metals 1, 2. Then, the magnetical mutual action in the circumferential direction of the base metals causes the arc to concentrically heat the rotating butt end surfaces at a high speed. When the end surfaces of the base metals 1, 2 reach the welding temperature, strong pressing force is exerted between the butt end surfaces, whereby welding is accomplished.
