Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture briquettes as starting material for high quality castings by adding an inorg. binder to reduced iron and a fine solid carbon substance as starting materials for the briquettes followed by press molding.
CONSTITUTION: A small amount of an inorg. binder such as sodium silicate is added to fine reduced iron and a fine solid carbon substance such as coke breeze. They are mixed well and molded into briquettes of suitable size and shape for castings. When the briquettes are charged into a melting furnace, carburizing is first carried out at the solid phase to lower the m.p. Thus, they are melted easily, uniform air permeation is attained, and the red-hot layer is uniformalized to stabilize the work.
