Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent coloring of the ends of a fluorescent lamp, during its life time, by providing a fine grain layer made of a borate of an alkaline earth metal over a phosphor layer in the vicinity of the electrode. CONSTITUTION:A phosphor layer 2 is formed on the inner wall of a galss tube 1. An electrode 4 is coated with an electron-discharging substance. A thin layer 3 made of a fine borate powder of an alkaline earth metal is formed on a part of the phosphor layer 2 which is near the electrode 4. Owing to such a constitution, metal barium or the like, which is scattered from the electrode 4 during the burning of a fluorescent lamp, touches the layer 3 and is oxidized into a white oxide, thus any coloring of the tube 1 being prevented. Besides, the provision of the thin layer 3 prepared from the former fine borate powder on the phosphor layer 3 does not decrease the luminous efficiency of the lamp, since an acid salt of an alkaline earth metal highly reflects both visible rays and ultraviolet rays.
