Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the damping capacity and strength of cast iron having a specified carbon equiv. value by adding a small amount of Mn, Mg and Ti to the cast iron or further adding Zr.
CONSTITUTION: To cast iron having 4.3W5.5wt% carbon equiv. (CE) represented by equation C wt%+Si wt%×1/3 are added 0.1W1.5wt% Mn, 0.01W0.15wt% Mg and 0.02W0.5wt% Ti or further added 0.01W0.5wt% Zr. The resulting cast iron is superior to conventional cast iron in damping capacity and has superior tensile strength in spite of such a high CE value. It is suitable for use as a material for machinery and tools with superior noise reducing characteristics.
