Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a char suitable for a raw material of metallurgical coke from a highly volatile non or slightly caking coal, by heating a raw material in a parallel flow with a heating gas in a rotary kiln through the multistage heating method.
CONSTITUTION: A highly volatile non or slightly caking coal 3 is made into a substantially parallel flow with a heating gas 2 in a rotary kiln and dry distilled with heating gases 5 and 9 for the second stage or more introduced thereinto slowly through the multistage heating method. The starting of the heating with the heating gas 2 at a relatively low temperature suppresses the initial temperature rise, and another heat source 5 is introduced into an intermediate point where the heating gas temperature is near the temperature of the char 4 of the kiln to reheat the heating gas 2 and make the char 4 reach the predetermined temperature.
