Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the orienting properties of a liq. crystal by forming a liq. crystal orienting film made of specified polymer on the surface of a substrate for a liq. crystal display device contacting with the crystal to provide long-term stability in place of silane. CONSTITUTION:A soln. of polyacrylonitrile or polyvinyl alcohol is applied to the surface of a substrate for a liq. crystal display device contacting with a liq. crtyatal, and the solvent is removed by evaporation. The resulting film is then heat treated at the m.p. of polyvinyl alcohol or a temp. slightly above the m.p. in case of polyvinyl alcohol to form a liq. crystal orienting film. Thus, the stability of liq. crystal orientation can be increased.
