Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide 2 titled electrolytic cell which enables electrolysis efficiency to be considerably improved, by providing a communicating pipe allowing part of anolyte to overflow from the upper part of an anode chamber and conducting the same to the lower part of a cathode chamber, and providing the opening of this communicating pipe into the anode chamber at a level higher than the discharge port for catholyte. CONSTITUTION:Saturated salt water is supplied 10 to an anode chamber 5, and part thereof is passed through a diaphragm 2 so that a caustic alkali soln. is formed in a cathode chamber 6. On the other hand, the chlorine gas produced in the chamber 5 is conducted through a pipe 11 into a reaction chamber 8. The remaining part of anolyte 5' is overflowed and is conducted to the lower part of the chamber 6 by the communicating pipe 12 penetrating through a diaphragm mounting part 2'. On the other hand, catholyte 6' is overflowed from the discharge port 13 provided at a level lower than the communicating pipe opening 12' of the chamber 5 into an intermediate chamber 14, and is further flowed down through a pipe 15 onto a perforated plate 9, from which it is dispersed into the chamber 8. In this chamber 8, alkali hypochlorite soln. is formed by the contact reaction of said dilute caustic alkali soln. and the chlorine gas and is discharged 19 to the outside of the system. Since in this method the anolyte level is maintained always higher than the catholyte level during electrolysis, the back migration phenomenon of the catholyte is prevented and the electrolysis efficiency is considerably improved.
