Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for organic synthetic chemicals inexpensively and readily by the intramolecular dehydrochlorination of an α,β-dichloroethylbenzene or β-chlorostyrene, in an aqueous alkali in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An α,β-dichloroethylene expressed by formula I (A is alkyl, alkoxyl, OH or halogen; n is 0W5), a β-chlorostyrene of formula III or their mixture is intermlocularly dehydrochlorinated in an aqueous alkali, e.g. a hydroxide of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal, etc., in a concentration of 30W60wt% in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst, e.g. a quaternary ammonium salt, at 50W 100°C, for 2W7hr under ordinary pressure, to give phenylacetylene. Benzyltrimethylammonium chloride, tetrabutylammonium chloride, etc., may be cited as the quaternary ammonium salt.
USE: A useful monomer for polymerization having a special feature in optical characteristics, etc.
