Abstract

PURPOSE:To discriminate the kind of a magnetic tape by reproducing the magnetic tape which has been recorded while bias current values are being changed and detecting the bias current values at which the reproduced signal assumes a maximum value and assumes a value decreased by a fixed rate from the maximum value, respectively. CONSTITUTION:A change-over switch 3 is shifted to the side B, and the signal of a suitable frequency is oscillated from an oscilltor 6. This signal is applied to a synthesizing circuit 4, where it is superposed or the bias current applied by a biasing circuit 7, and the superposed signal is recorded with a recording heads. This bias current is changed. The change of this bias current is executed by controlling the bias circuit 7 by a microcomputer 12. The magnetic tape recorded while the bias current is being changed is reproduced with a playback head 8, and the reproduced signal obtained with an amplifier and a playback equalizer 9 is read into the microcomputer. Both of the bias current value at which the reproduced output assumes a maximum value and the bias current value at which the reproduced output assumes 1/2 the maximum value are detected, whereby the kind of the magnetic tape is discriminated.
