Abstract

PURPOSE:To remove hardly souble salts by cleaning an ion exchange membrane polluted by the hardly soluble salts separated out during use in electrodialysis with an aqueous alkaline solution containing a complexing agent. CONSTITUTION:For example, when a water to be treated, containing 4ppm Ba<++> ion, is treated under the conditions of an applying voltage of 1.0V (per a pair of cation and anion exchange membranes) and a desalting rate of 45% in an electrodialyzing tank in which large numbers of ion exchange membranes are incorporated, 0.7-1.7wt% BaSO4 per gram of membrane is separated out on the concentrating chamber side of the cation exchange membrane. Then, the inorganic colloids and microorganisms adhered to the membranes are removed by means of a NaOH solution and a HCl solution circuited and then cleaning liquid of pH 7.5-13, containing 0.5-20% complexing agent, e.g., EDTA (ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid), is circulated in the dialyzing tank to dissolve BaSO4, whereby the desalting rate is restored to approx. 44% at an applying voltage of approx. 1.1V.
