Abstract
PURPOSE:To facilitate the surface hardening of top ends of wire materials fixed to a rotary shaft, by radiating high-energy beams to the materials, and injecting a reactive gas to the heated material. CONSTITUTION:A burnishing tool is attached with tool wire materials 1A, 1B, 1C. The wire materials are placed on the periphery of an end portion of a rotary shaft 2 of the burnishing tool, and tightened onto the rotary shaft 2 with a tightener 3. The top end 4 of each tool wire material is exposed to the radiations of high-energy beams 5 which are the convergence of beams 7 from a laser gun 10. The beams may be ion, electron or plasma beams, instead. A reactive gas or air containing carbon or nitrogen is injected from gas cylinders 9, 9A onto the part exposed to the radiations of the high-energy beams. Consequently, a carbide or nitride dispersion layer is generated in the top end 4 which is quenched at the same time. Thus, the surface of the top end is hardened.
