Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable to prepare a color liquid crystal product, by providing a liquid crystal containing a two-color developable compound having a tetrazine skeletal and having a long axis of a molecule oriented in parallel with a substrate plate between two substrate plates having an electrode.
CONSTITUTION: A silicon oxide coating is provided to an inner wall of two substrate plates 1, 1 having an electrode and, after lapping, said two substrate plates are arranged opposedly, a periphery thereof is sealed hermetically, a liquid crystal is poured therebetween to form two liquid crystal containers and said substrate plates are held between a reflecting plate 2 and a polarizing plate 3 to form a liquid display device. In the aforementioned liquid crystal, 15W30wt% two-color developable compound 5 shown by the formula (wherein X, Y are alkyl, alkoxy, hydroxy, acetyl, alkylphenyl, alkoxyphenyl, acyloxy, acyloxyphenyl, cyanophenyl) is compounded so as to be held to a liquid crystal molecule 4. The compound 5 comes to be held and oriented in a spiral condition between liquid crystal molecules 4 and becomes similar to a conventional twist nematic type but said compound 5 is reoriented almost vertically by an electric field and a light absorbing direction is changed to a thickness direction of the liquid crystal and, thereby, absorption of a specific wave length occurs to develop a color.
